The inclusion of a first aid guide in first aid kits is required by ANSI Z308.1-2009. The majority of the kits in the United States today have first aid guides that are out dated. Minimum standards of a first aid guide should include the following information: Emergency steps of assessing an injured person on the scene and calling 911 or other emergency numbers is establishing if the injured person is responsive and making sure the injured person has an open and clear airway. Performing rescue breathing if needed. If the injured person is conscious, treat for airway obstruction. Perform CPR if needed and know how to operate an AED. The guide also needs to point out warning signs and symptoms of shock. Control bleeding with direct pressure. The assessment of the severity of a burn along with exposure to extremes in temperature needs to be included in a first aid guide. For example: abrasions, cuts and lacerations, fractures and sprains, eye injuries, mouth and teeth injuries and lastly, bites and stings.
