One of the top ten most violated OSHA standards is 29 CFR 1910.178 (OSHA’s powered industrial truck standard).
In a recent report, OSHA had estimated that thousands of employees are injured each year and over 100 employees are killed in accidents involving forklifts on the job.
There are several factors you should consider in forklift safety, here are just a few;
Employers should be diligent is seeing that all forklift training is up to date, that all new employees have gone through the training program, and that policy is being followed.
Equipment: Check the age, condition, and maintenance of your equipment. Are all features in good working order (brakes, tires, hydraulics, steering, etc.)?
Production: Are employees stressed? Are they rushing to meet goals or deadlines? Are they not feeling well due to a cold, flu, or aches and pains?
Workplace: Are isles free of clutter with no obstructions at doors or intersections? Is there good control of employee foot traffic in the work area?
Remember, Forklift accidents can be costly for your business and your employees!
