The common cold can be one of the leading causes for missed work. An average adult will have up to 5 colds in any given year. Very few people will avoid getting the infection.

Symptoms can include a headache, stuffy nose, coughing, and all over aches and pains. For best relief, Ibuprophen or Aspirin are preferred.

People become infective at the first sign of sneezing, coughing or a runny nose (About two days after they were infected). There is no cure for the common cold but you can help control the spread by including a hand sanitizer in your first aid cabinets. Also consider stocking over the counter pain relievers and cold relief medications.

Encourage your employees to use these good hygiene practices;

1.)    Cough in their upper elbow and not their hand

2.)    Wash their hands often

3.)    Avoid rubbing the eyes or nose after contact with common items (door knobs, telephones, etc.)

The common cold can have a dramatic affect on absenteeism and work performance and should not be taken lightly.
