HEAT STRESS
STOP IT BEFORE IT STARTS!
Prevention is always the key to avoiding workplace accidents and illnesses. Workers exposed to extreme heat or works in hot environments are at risk of heat stress. Heat stress can result in heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rashes. Heat can also increase the risk of injuries due to sweaty palms, fogged-up safety glasses, and dizziness. Prevention is important. Employers should provide training to workers so they understand what heat stress is, how it affects their health and safety, and how it can be prevented. Workers should avoid sun, high humidity and extreme heat but when this is unavoidable, use the following check list for preventative measures. ü Schedule your heaviest work in the coolest parts of the day and gradually build up to the heavy work. ü Take frequent breaks in a cool place whenever humidity is high and in extreme heat. ü Drink lots of liquids. You should never be thirsty. There are electrolyte drinks specifically designed for this and readily available. ü Wear clothing that is light colored and loose fitting. ü Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and large amounts of sugar in drinks. ü Pay attention to your physical condition and that of your coworkers-be aware that protective clothing can increase your risk of heat stress.
