The term “presenteeism” refers to an employee who is physically at work but due to minor illness or injury is unproductive. Whenever an employee is not feeling their best, productivity often plummets and this can cost any size business money and valuable time.

A research paper from Cornell University Institute for Health and Productivity recently stated that on the job loss of productivity can be a high as 60% of the total cost of worker illness and exceeds the costs of medical, disability benefits, and absenteeism.

This is when a well stocked first aid kit is a valuable asset. Having the proper supplies on hand to relieve discomfort for these workers can be very valuable.

Over the counter discomfort aids such as cold relief, aspirin, ibuprofen, decongestants and antacids can be very valuable. For example presenteeism from the common cold (the leading cause of missed workdays) cost businesses an estimated $16.6 billion annually in lost productivity. Arthritis, headaches and back problems cost upward of $47 billion per year.

This often boosts employee moral as well. In a survey by Harris Interactive they revealed that 68% of workers surveyed felt they would be more productive if their employer furnished a first aid kit at their work station.
