Stay Safe-Avoid Workplace Distractions
Workplace distractions and work interruptions can lead to lost productivity, performance errors or even accidents. Some interruptions are unavoidable however others can be controlled. Avoid interruptions when doing critical tasks. Don’t interrupt workers using power equipment. Always shut down machinery or disengage you power tools when interrupted. Take responsibility for not interrupting others but if you must interrupt someone always make them aware of your presence first to get their attention. Take responsibility for yourself and control these common personal distracters. Cell phones and PDAs: Check first to see if these are even allowed in your work area, if so then always keep the ringer on low volume or silent when you work. Don’t answer if you are in the middle of a critical task, let it go to voice mail. Don’t answer emails or text messages while equipment is running or doing critical tasks. Reply back during a break period.
IPOD or music headsets: Wearing these in an industrial setting can be dangerous. Although it can be relaxing to some it can also keep you from hearing warning alarms or back up alarms on moving equipment. Wearing these headsets takes you attention away from your surroundings and could result in injury or accidents.
Remember to stay safe and limit all workplace distractions.
