Choices in Hearing Protection:

When it comes to hearing protection devices, there are many types and styles to choose from. Making a choice can be difficult at times but remember, the best hearing protection device is one that is comfortable to wear and convenient to use when in a noise hazard zone. Here is a small sample of your choices;

Earmuffs: These come in a variety of models and work to completely block out noise by completely covering the outer ear. Note that this may not be suitable for workers with beards or eye glasses since facial hair and eye glass temples break to seal of the noise barriers. Canal Caps or expandable plugs may be a better choice for these individuals.

Expandable Foam Plugs: These are the most popular and widely used plugs. The materials for these plugs are formable and let the plug expand and conform to the ear canal. Therefore one size fits all. Simply roll these into a small cylindrical shape with your fingers on in your palm them place them in your ear canal. They will then expand to fit.

Reusable Pre-Molded Plugs: Made from rubber, silicon, or plastic these are available in sizes small, medium, or large. The advantage is that they are washable and reusable; this is a good alternative to rolling expandable plugs when working in a dirty environment because you don’t need to handle or roll the tips.

Canal Caps: Earplugs on a flexible plastic or metal band can be very convenient when coming and going from noisy environments. When in a quiet environment simply remove and let hang around the neck and when returning to a noisy environment they can be easily reinstalled.

Foam Tip on a Stem Plugs:  If you prefer the comfort of foam plugs but don’t like rolling them in a dirty environment this is a good choice. These are inserted similar to a foam plug but you do not have to roll them. Simply hold the stem and press into the ear.
