It’s Just Too Darn Hot!
The recent heat wave that has settled in on most of the country is not letting up and there seems to be no end in sight for the near future. We have all read the recent blogs and newsletters on heat stress and heat stroke and by now know the warning signs and dangers. Even though most of us are starting to get acclimated to this heat we must still be on guard against heat related illness. The best way to do this is with pre-planning. If you work outdoors then look at the weather forecast for the upcoming work week and plan ahead to prepare yourself for those excessively hot days. Hydrate yourself BEFORE the days work. Drink at least 16 oz. of water before bed the night before and then 16 oz. again when you awake. It’s best to drink plenty of fluids after you eat breakfast also. Take plenty of water and/or sports drinks with you to work. Electrolyte (sports) drinks are specifically designed to replenish the natural electrolytes in your body. Although water will hydrate you and has some cooling effects, the body needs something it can absorb quickly. Electrolyte drinks such as Squincher are specifically designed for the high heat stress environment. Drink 6 to 8 oz. of this every 15 minutes or so and a glass of water every thirty minutes. Remember to avoid caffeine and alcohol and always drink BEFORE you become thirsty. Plan ahead and wear light colored, light weight, and loose fitting clothes. Finally, pay attention to your body. If you notice any of the symptoms of heat stress it is time to take a break and find a shady or cool spot to rest.
