Everyone uses hand tools whether on occasion at home or full time at work but did you know that 8% of all industrial accidents involve a hand tool of some sort. This could be either a powered or manual hand tool.

Most of the time, this is attributed to using the wrong tool for the job or using the correct tool incorrectly. Failure to follow safety procedures and failure to wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment also accounts for a portion of these injuries.

Protect yourself and others by following some simple “common sense” guidelines;

  1. Never use a powered tool you do not know how to use or have not been trained to use.
  2. Each tool has a specific task it was designed to do, know your tools and their correct function.
  3. Always select the right size tool for the job and never use “cheaters”.
  4. Make sure that you and your tools are secure when working on elevated platforms, scaffolds, or ladders for your protection as well as those working beneath you.
  5. If any tool becomes worn or damaged then replace it or have it fixed.
  6. When transporting tools keep the cutting edges pointed away from you, never put sharp tools in your pockets, and never test the sharpness of a tool with your fingers.
  7. Keep the cutting edges sharp. This will make your tools easier to use.
  8. Finally, ALWAYS wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such a gloves and safety eyewear
