N95 disposable paper respirators are defined by OSHA as "filtering face-pieces". OSHA has a Respiratory Protection Standard and it includes a written program, medical evaluation, and fit test.
When an employee wears an N95 dust mask the employer must make sure the dust mask does not create a hazard. An example of an hazard N95 dust mask would be if it was dirty or wet. Before an employee wears an N95 dusk mask the Appendix D of the OSHA Standard must be given to the employee verbally or in a written format. There is no formal training required if the employee voluntary wears the mask.
Medical Evaluation is needed only if the atmospheric hazards warrant the use of a respirator. Fit test are not needed if the employee wears an N95 voluntary. It is mandatory to wear a N95 if a fit test is required.
