An AED is an automated external defibrillator that is a portable machine that monitors the heart of an individual that might be experiencing cardiac arrest.  If the machine detects cardiac arrest, it will deliver an electric shock to the heart of the victim bringing back the heart to a normal rhythm.

OSHA does not require AEDs in the workplace, however, the general duty clauses states that employers must provide as safe a workplace as possible.  Because of this, most companies provide AEDs as part of their first aid and safety program.  OSHA does require that if you have an AED in the workplace, you must have someone trained on how to use it.  Training is simple and is supplied with the AED.
