Western First Aid & Safety has put together an example of an eyewash and safety procedure that you are welcome to use inside your company.

This procedure is intended to provide instruction for proper inspection of eyewashes and safety showers.  You will need an eyewash / safety shower where the eyes or body of any person may be exposed to corrosive materials.  Each company needs to provide suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing.  Remember that eyewash bottles DO NOT provide the 15 minute flush needed as ANSI / OSHA have prescribed.

Equipment:

1) Eyewash / safety showers are to be installed within 10 seconds of corrosive hazard

2) Eyewash / safety showers must be installed on the same level as the hazard

3) The path of travel from the hazard to the eyewash / safety showers must be free of obstructions and as straight as possible

Inspections:

1) Monthly inspection should be done for each station

2) An inspection card should be used on each station with initials and date of inspection

3) Ensure that access to the station is unobstructed

4) Visually inspect to ensure that there are no broken parts, leakage...

5) Clean the bowl and nozzles

6) Run the station for 15 seconds

7) Check that the flow is effective and continuous and the unit remains activated hands free

8) Inform a manager if the unit has any problems

9) Follow up to ensure that problems identified during inspection are resolved

10) Make sure the eyewash / safety shower is well marked with a sign
